Explanation of "PageRank™"
PageRank™ is a proprietary system, create by Google's founders,
for ranking web pages. It is a complicated mathematical formula
(unbeknownst to the common man) that relies on the democratic nature
of the internet. Using the vast internet's interlinking structure, a
"Vote" is cast by any web page, "A", that links to another web
page, "B". The total of that mathematical formula is the
indicator of an individual page's value or PageRank™.
Google looks at more than the sheer volume of
votes, or links a page receives; it also analyzes the page that casts the
vote. Votes cast by pages that are themselves "important" weigh more
heavily and help to make other pages "important."
Google's PageRank (PR#) is just a starting point of what Google
perceives the value of that particular page.
Each page's rank is determined by a secret mathematical formula that is closely held
only by Google. (if any knows the exact formula please send me an email, I'll pay
$$$)
PageRank is basically determined combination of many factors, of which the 2 most
important ones are: (not in any order)
1) The raw number of incoming links.
2) The PR rank of the Page that the incoming links
Incoming links from Higher PR ranked pages are generally worth more than the same
exact incoming link from Lower PR ranked pages.
A page that has incoming links is given a vote by the page that links to it. The
value of the vote depends on the incoming link page's PR number and the number of
other votes that page is casting (the # of other outgoing links). If a PR4 page has
4 outgoing links then the vote it casts is worth more than the vote cast by another
PR4 page that has 40 outgoing links.
Add up all the votes and that will determine your page's PR #. I've seen pages
ranked as PR4 that have only 3 incoming links from PR5 ranked pages. I've also seen
PR5 pages that have hundreds of incoming links from PR2 & PR3 pages. Now if only
I could get hundreds or thousands of PR5+ sites linking to me! ;)
Google's PageRank is just one factor to getting listed high on the SERPs (Search
Engine Result Pages) There are at least a couple more!
How to find out your page's PageRank
To find PageRank you will use the Google Tool Bar. You can get the Google Tool Bar for FREE -
be sure to download it with the "Advanced features". In the
Google Toolbar you will see . If you move your mouse over this graph and then
keep your mouse still, a yellow box will pop up and tell you the Google PageRank
of that page. PageRank is on a scale of 0 to 10.
The Google website explains PageRank as:
PageRank relies on the uniquely democratic nature of the web by using its vast
link structure as an indicator of an individual page's value. In essence, Google
interprets a link from page A to page B as a vote, by page A, for page B. But,
Google looks at more than the sheer volume of votes, or links a page receives; it
also analyzes the page that casts the vote. Votes cast by pages that are
themselves "important" weigh more heavily and help to make other pages
"important." - Google.
As you get more quality links to your site, your PageRank will
increase.
